Nile river
Swot analysis
    Strengths:
  • It is the longest river in the world .
  • It flows through north eastern Africa for about 4,132 miles(6,650km).
  • The great civilization of ancient Egypt developed in the banks of Nile.
  • The distant sources of Nile are rivers that begin in Burandi and Rwanda and flows north across the dessert of Sudan and Egypt where forms a delta and splits into the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Tropical rain forest  grow along the southern Nile.
  • Savanna grasslands run along the blue Nile.
  • Fish found in Nile include perch, cats ,fish, eels etc.
  • Nile perch row to 300 pounds.
  • It irrigates about 6 million acres of land in Egypt and about 23/4 million acres in Sudan.
  • The Nile valley and delta rank among the most fertile farming areas in the world.
  • It deposits silts and also floods certain areas every summer.
  • Water from Nile enables farmers to raise various crops every year which include wheat, rice,cotton etc.
  • Aswan high dam and other dams generate electric power and provide a steady flow of water for irrigation.
  • Kabalega falls is on the Victorian Nile.

    Weakness:
    • It runs through eleven countries of Africa, providing a regular source for conflicts over water rights and distribution.
    • The quality of river water is seriously threatened by untreated industrial and agricultural waste, sewage and municipal waste water.
    • Ground water pollution is closely related to adjacent polluted water high concentrations of nutrients have been absorbed in the shallow ground water largely surpassing, WHO standards for drinking water use.
    • The residues of insect ides where detected but are usually below the limits set by the WHO drinking purpose.
    • These rises in pollution are often cause by the Nile's low water level which can cleaned by releasing the extra water from the valves.
    • But the increased demand by the growing population as caused water to be scare.
    Opportunities:
  • Main water way for moving people and goods.
  • Egypt ability to control the annual flooding in the Lower Nile river valley through construction of dance and the buildings of irrigation system as contributed greatly to the Egypt’s economy and prosperity.
  • Many jobs created in the river cruise and as a tourist guides,
    shop owner etc, due to tourism.
  • Ideal for fishing variety of fish.  
  • Water is stored in lake Nasser to be used during the year.



      Threats:
  • At Risk!!!!!!The Native Nile Crocodiles

    Depleting resources due to tourism.
  • The expansion of desert areas since the Aswan high dams construction in 1970 as increased in soil salinity which allowed for water borne diseases to emerge.
  • The most polluted lakes are lake Maryut and lake Manzala.
  • The dam has also cut off the natural flow of nutrients – rich silt to the valley floor, which has resulted in Egyptians farmers having to use more irrigation system and fertilizers.
  • Increased soil salination is pressing environmental issue .
  • The river receives a large quantity of industrial, agricultural, domestic waste water.
  • Analysis conform that presence of high concentration of chromium and manganese in all sediments samples.
